This manual has been produced to accompany the Groundworks, Service Pipe and Meter Housing Installation training course which covers installation of standard water connections and the laying of associated apparatus from the property boundary to the first internal water fitting after the meter.
This is sometimes referred to as 'stop tap to stop tap".

Pipe size
In most instances the size of pipe installed will be 25mm. However, contractors need to be aware that the size of pipe installed is subject to local requirements.
Therefore, contractors must always consult the Water Undertaker to confirm the size of the service pipe, before installation commences.

The manual is separated into four sections dealing with:

1. The regulatory framework and how contractors are approved
2. The Water Regulations and Byelaws (Scotland)
3. Service pipe installation
4. Water meter housing installation (optional)

The water meter housing installation element is optional since most water companies carry out this work themselves and do not approve contractors for this activity.
This is explained in more detail in section 1.

Approval
This manual, the training course and assessment have been approved for use in training by Water Undertakers throughout the United Kingdom (UK). However, it is important to understand that the Groundworks, Service Pipe and Meter Housing Installation training does not of itself bestow Approved Contractor status - you must apply to one of the Water Companies' Approved Contractor schemes for approval - Approved Contractor Schemes are explained in more detail in section 1. Please note that the scope of Approved Contractor schemes does not cover water meter housing installation, unless a specific water company recognises section 4 of this training within their area of supply.

Who is this course for?
The training is mainly aimed at persons wishing to become Approved Contractors by providing evidence to the Approved Contractor schemes that appropriate training has been completed.
The training is also relevant to designers and site managers who are an integral part of ensuring the following pitfalls are avoided before, during and after the water connection is made:

- Failure to comply with legal requirements of water regulations and water byelaws;
- Loss of and poor supply;
- Pipes not labelled leading to:

Installation confusion;

Incorrect metering/billing for the end user;

- Freezing of supply:
- incorrectly insulated;
- Incorrect depth;
- Leakage on supply and potential damage to property;
- Contamination of water supplied by poor on site hygiene, storage and handling of fittings;
- Refusal to connect by water company and lost time through repeat inspections;
- Liquidated damage claims from the developer/self-lay organisation;
- Retrospective damage claims and refusal to release funds by water company;
- Potential legal action.
